He was a Singaporean on a year-long student exchange programme in Hong Kong.

Brandon Tee Zhi Yi, 24, from the National University of Singapore, met Ms Ju Benhua while on a year-long student exchange at Hong Kong University.

In August last year, 24-year-old Brandon Tee Zhi Yi fell in love with student Ju Benhua, reported Hong Kong newspaper Oriental Daily.

Tee is a law student at the National University of Singapore, while Miss Ju studies at Hong Kong University.

The two became a couple one month later.

In June this year, however, their relationship soured.

Despite breaking up, the two kept in contact, but relations between them quickly spiralled into a complicated mess.

Now, Tee is being tried in court for four counts related to voluntarily causing physical harm to Miss Ju.

It all began when Tee invited Miss Ju to his apartment in the Central district of Hong Kong on July 7 this year, on the pretext of returning the gifts the couple exchanged during the course of the relationship.

The Hong Kong court heard that Miss Ju agreed to visit Tee’s apartment because he appeared to be emotionally low and unable to deal with the break-up.

Shortly after arriving, however, the two became embroiled in a vicious argument, which later led to a physical struggle.

Tee allegedly pushed Miss Ju against the wall and flung her onto the bed.

In addition to punching and kicking her, he also threatened her by pointing a bottle opener close to her eye and scraping it against her body.

After the tussle, the two fell asleep.

On waking, Tee allegedly blew hot and cold, asking Miss Ju to stay with him one moment, then demanding that she leave the next.

She stayed at Tee’s house until July 10, when he asked her again to leave.

Miss Ju admitted in court that she was not forced to stay in Tee’s home, but did not leave because she felt that escaping was not a solution at the time.

The court heard that the pair had sex three times during the time they spent at Tee’s home. After leaving, Miss Ju called the police for help.
