Tonsil stones are white, foul-smelling globs made out of bacteria, food debris, mucus and saliva. As you know, the tonsils are your natural barriers against bad bacteria that enter the mouth. These glands function as nets that catch food particles, bacteria and viruses that pass through your throat. As food particles, saliva, mucus and bacteria accumulates in these pockets, these then form clumps which will eventually solidify into what we now know as tonsil stones or tonsilloliths. While tonsil stones aren’t necessarily dangerous, larger tonsilloliths can be a major nuisance and can cause some discomfort.
