In a continuing effort to help homeowners who are out of work, the Obama Administration recently implemented two mortgage relief programs. The Making Home Affordable (MHA) and Special Forbearance programs provide mechanisms through which homeowners can qualify for three to four months’ reprieve on their mortgage payments, in addition to a restructuring of their home loans. The programs have been instrumental in helping homeowners stave off foreclosure and get caught up on their mortgage payments. The Making Home Affordable initiative includes five programs aimed at helping homeowners and other mortgage-holders relieve some of the financial stress caused by the current economic downturn: Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP), Second Lien Modification Program (2MP), Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP), Mortgage Forbearance, and Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives Program (HAFA).
